DVP089 Judges 8:33-34 (March 30)

33 As soon as Gideon died, the people of Israel turned again and whored after the Baals and made Baal-berith their god.
34 And the people of Israel did not remember the LORD their God, who had delivered them from the hand of all their enemies on every side,

True to form, once again Israel turns from God after Gideon dies. Despite his great victories, delivering Israel with far inferior odds of success to their enemies (which should have seen them praising God ceaselessly), they turn to a false god who has done nothing for them. The scriptures mock these false gods and those who worship them by saying that a god made from wood or stone cannot talk and has no power.

It is unfathomable how this repeated failure by Israel can continue until we look at our own lives and consider how regularly faithless each of us is, in our own ways, despite the daily blessings we receive from God. We must take time constantly to reflect on the blessings of God in our lives, and we should aim to serve him out of the sense of gratitude that we actively cultivate and grow within ourselves and each other.
